Coconut oil works great as a sealant for my hair. It’s pretty much the only oil I use on my hair. I love how light weight it is, adding the right amount of shine without leaving my hair feeling greasy at all. The great thing about coconut oil is that it is one of the few oils that actually penetrate the hair shaft. It’s molecular structure is small enough so that it does penetrate the hair shaft, but in a very small quantity. Because coconut oil’s penetration is limited, the remainder of the oil remains on top of the cuticle, coating it and acting as a sealant to prevent your hair from drying out faster. You kind of get the best of both worlds: a little bit of moisture along with some sealing properties to help keep the moisture in your hair!
Sometimes, we tend to neglect our scalp. I know I did, and my scalp was not looking pretty! Coconut oil works great as a scalp conditioner, relieving dry, itchy scalp and even dandruff. It also has antibacterial properties, which helps fight off scalp infections. It also helps heal different scalp conditions, like cradle cap found in babies.
Using coconut oil as a pre-poo and to detangle my hair before washing has reduced some of my breakage and shedding! I apply the coconut oil to my hair before I shampoo, finger detangling during the process to remove all of the major knots and tangles before going in to fully detangle. I let it sit for about twenty minutes, and then proceed with wash day.
