Today (August 5), NBC introduced newcomer Shanice Williams to the world as the star of its upcoming The Wiz Live! remake. Williams appeared on the Today show to talk about her new opportunity and following in the footsteps of Stephanie Mills and Diana Ross who first played the role. The 18-year-old New Jersey native is just beginning her journey of living her dreams after beating out hundreds vying for the coveted role in a national open-casting call.
“I don’t know what’s in store, but this is always what I’ve wanted to do,” said Williams. “So I guess I’m ready! I’m ready now.”
The natural-haired actress will star alongside Queen Latifah, who will play The Wizard, Mary J. Blige (Wicket Witch) and David Alan Grier (Cowardly Lion). Stephanie Mills, who originated the Dorothy role in the 1970s Broadway play, will play Auntie Em.
The Wiz Live! is set to air live on December 3. Flip the page to watch when she first learns the news!
