If you thought Naturi Naughton’s African-inspired dress on the 2015 BET Awards red carpet last night channeled high school designer Kyemah McEntyre — you know, the teen who broke the internet with her self-designed prom dress — then you were right! As it turns out, she also designed this floor-length gown with plunging neckline and criss-crossed back.

The New Jersey natives connected after McEntyre’s own custom-made dress became a viral and headline sensation for empowering budding fashionistas and designers everywhere. In an exclusive with Necole Bitchie, the 18-year-old explained how she scored her second design job ever:
Naturi contacted me through e-mail, and we talked over the phone about her ideal dress. She explained to me that she wanted to connect with her African roots as well. I explained to her that my prom dress was my first design ever and that her design would be my second. So, of course, I asked her to bare with me. Naturi and her beautiful soul welcomed me despite my experience with Fashion Designing. She wanted to shed light on young people from her community [East Orange, New Jersey] and that she did. I enlisted a local seamstress by the name of Markell Mockabee, who brought my design to life.
Kudos to Naughton for having faith in and helping to further McEntyre’s goal to be a voice of her generation. We look forward to seeing more of McEntyre’s creations. In the meantime, click through for front and back shots of the show-stopping dress.
