Hype Chat: Stylist Ruth Jean-Baptiste Talks Kinky Twists & Working With Nicole Ari Parker

Ruth Jean-BaptisteRuth Jean-Baptiste, the talented hairstylist behind Nicole Ari Parker’s kinky twists, talks to Hype Hair about her love of hairstyling, how she created Nicole’s gorgeous styles, and shares her tips on how to care for protective braided styles.

HH: How did you get your start in the hairstyling industry?
RJB: My mother was a salon owner in the early ’90s and every Saturday morning, she would put me to work, answering phones, doing salon chores, greeting clients, shampooing and prepping clients for styling—you name it, I did it! It was as if I owned the place and loathed having to go! Twenty plus years later, my loathing has turned into gratefulness as I thank my mother for instilling in me the work ethic to own and operate my own business. I now reside in Atlanta living my dream.

HH: You are the stylist behind Nicole Ari Parker’s beautiful kinky twists, which she wore on a recent cover of Hype Hair magazine. We loved her look! Tell us about your experience creating Nicole’s style.
RJB: I met Nicole Ari Parker through a good friend of mine, Melissa Hibbert, owner of Sheeq Cosmetics. She called me one day and said, “Hey, Nicole Ari Parker just saw my hair and asked for your number, can I give it to her?” I said sure, but in my mind, I said to myself, yeah right, a major icon such as Nicole Ari Parker is not going to come all the way to Atlanta just to get her hair done by me. In June 2014, Nicole’s assistant calls requesting to schedule an appointment. I talked her into doing the kinky twists and she accepted! Nicole is more on the conservative side and the kinky twists were right for her.

HH: Tell us about the hair that you use to create all of your styles.
RJB: The hair is from my own hair line called Fro’kinks Collection. This hair replicates our very own natural hair making it so undetectable to others. It’s super soft and has an awesome texture.

HH: What are your tips on caring for braids and twist styles once they are done?
RJB: The protective styles that I offer require very little maintenance. Koils by Nature Hair Butter, a type of oil base, and a good hair wash regimen works well with this type of hair, and it’s important that it’s tucked away at night, so satin bonnets work!

HH: What’s next on the agenda for you and your salon?
RJB: I’ll actually be offering classes for tips on how to achieve Nicole’s look, and people will be able to register online by visiting xpressyourkinks.com.
