Style Points: Monyetta Shaw

Monyetta ShawMonyetta Shaw is on a roll!  The Greenwood, Louisiana, native got her start in the industry as a radio personality on Louisiana’s highly acclaimed Dave Roe show. She then went on to star in numerous films, including the 2008 movie Soul Men, and since then, she not only captured the hearts of Atlanta Exes’ fans, she has used her rising fame to help launch many other projects that are near and dear to her heart.

We caught up with Monyetta to talk about her latest projects and hair faves.

Hype Hair: You are clearly one busy lady. Tell us about the show and your latest projects.
Monyetta Shaw: I am proud to be a part of the Exes franchise. I feel that Atlanta Exes is a good fit for me because it’s a positive show about women who are moving on or have moved on and are just taking care of business. Be it the family, building a empire or what have you.

I have a company called The Evan Grave Group. It’s a full service multi-media firm that specializes in talent bookings, fashion—I’m re-launching my boutique, Emerlyn & Ester Boutique, but this time online very soon—TV and film production, and publishing. My first children’s book, The Adventures of Maddie, is out now on Amazon and iTunes. I am currently in negotiations with a major powerhouse publishing company to release the second book so The Adventures of Maddie will soon be found all over the US.

HH: We love your hair. What are your favorite hair products?
MS: Paul Mitchell Lavender Mint Moisturizing Shampoo & Conditioner. Also, my favorite finishing spray is by Sebastian, Shaper, which gives a firm hold but also allows you to re-curl after without leaving hair stiff.

HH: What are some of your favorite hairstyles?
MS: I love a high bun. I can be glamorous or be super mom and not have to worry about my hair flying everywhere while playing with my kids. Another fave is a nice natural part down the middle, a straight look. No bump, just flatten and go. And lastly curls, curls, curls. The more, the better. Big hair with lots of curls is great for the perfect night.

HH: Is your hair natural or relaxed?
MS: I’ve been natural for almost eight years now.

HH: Do you have any advice to maintaining healthy hair?
MS: Moisture, moisture, moisture. We black women have to moisturize our hair. Always use a heat protectant when flat ironing and a ceramic or tourmaline plated flat iron with temperature control. I would also recommend taking a break between weave installs to let your hair breathe, and apply a treatment to your real hair. Don’t ever neglect your hair.

HH: How do you feel about extensions?
MS: I love extensions but I prefer them in a custom unit, a wig! I like the option of wearing my natural hair at the drop of a dime and feeling my scalp! I love to switch my hair up a lot and with extensions you have variety without damaging your real hair.

HH: How do you keep your hair looking great?
MS: By simply not neglecting it! Taking care of my natural hair. Protecting it from a lot of heat, and conditioning it on a regular basis. And for my glam looks I call on the pros.
